Remodeling Contractors

by Jinky Bagagnan

The first thing you want to do is contact several local remodeling contractors and tell them what you want included in the remodeling project. They can make recommendations and provide design help and free estimates.

The first rooms you should consider remodeling are the kitchen and bathrooms as these rooms provide a tremendous amount of the homes value. They are, of course, some of the most expensive rooms to renovate because of the plumbing, electrical, sewage and gas hookups. Also, you will probably want new appliances in the kitchen and plumbing fixtures for the bathrooms which adds to the cost. However, on the average these rooms return 84% of your investment, which is one of the highest renovation investment returns available to most homeowners.

When picking out new appliances and fixtures be sure and look for the Energy Star on them. The Energy Star rating helps ensure that they use as little electricity as possible and that is good for the environment.

Also, talk to your contractor about using eco-friendly materials for your renovation. These materials are either made for renewable resources or recycled materials. The new materials should also be recyclable. Ask him to avoid using paints, thinners and adhesives with high levels of volatile organic compounds. The less pollution we put into the atmosphere the less we have to cleanup.

Budget Remodeling

If you are on a tight budget, there are still plenty of things that can be done to update your home. A fresh coat of paint on the walls, trim and ceilings does wonders for making a room look new.

Updating or adding new light fixtures and lamps is a great way to change the look of a room without spending a lot. Replace the window treatments and add a throw rug and bingo, a new look and new feeling.

If you have wood floors that are looking a little worn, rent a floor sander at your local rental center and clean them up. Then add your favorite color of stain or just seal them with a high quality floor varnish.

A few hundred dollars and you can new carpeting in a bedroom. Throw in a new bedspread or duvet and some decorator pillows and you have a serene retreat.

Are you tired of the kitchen countertops? A little work and some ceramic tile can brighten those old counters. Put light colored paint on the cabinets and change the cabinet handles and door pulls and it will look like you spent a million dollars.
